About the Uchiwa Fan
Made by Hand. Made to Be Used.
The bamboo is carefully shaped into the handle and fine ribs that support the fan. Washi paper is applied over the frame, trimmed to its distinctive form, and finished with kakishibu.
The persimmon tannin penetrates and strengthens the washi, helping create a fan known for exceptional durability. Over time, the kakishibu naturally develops a deeper and richer tone, giving every fan an individual character that continues to evolve with use.
The more you use it, the more it becomes your own.
The history of uchiwa making in Kutami is said to date back to 1600, when the technique for making fans was introduced to the area.
Kutami later became one of Japan's historic centers for uchiwa production. Today, Kurikawa Shoten remains the workshop preserving this distinctive local tradition.
In Japanese, the name Kutami (来民) can be interpreted as "people come," which led Kutami Uchiwa to become associated with welcoming people and prosperity. For generations, these fans have also been given as meaningful gifts and keepsakes.
Why Kakishibu?
Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese finish made from fermented persimmon juice and rich in natural tannins.
Applied to the washi paper, it helps:
- Strengthen and reinforce the paper
- Improve the fan's durability and longevity
- Traditionally provide protection against insects
- Develop a beautiful, deeper patina as it ages
The result is an object that is both functional and remarkably beautiful.
Perfect Beside a Bincho Grill
For us at The Bincho Grill, the Kurikawa Uchiwa feels especially at home beside a charcoal grill.
A few deliberate strokes of an uchiwa can direct fresh air toward the charcoal when starting a fire for your grill, and help direct the heat when the grill is cooking.
And when the cooking is finished, it returns to its original purpose as an elegant hand fan.
